Last week SI writer Richard Deitsch interviewed singer Kelly Clarkson for the magazine's Q&A.The American Idol champ is a spokesperson for NASCAR. Here are additional excerpts from their conversation SI: This is the largest deal NASCAR has ever forged with an artist. Why did they choose you? Clarkson: I'm taking it as the All-American thing. Everybody always kind of puts me with the All-American idea. That means we have a lot of weird Americans (laughs). SI: How often will you be at races? Clarkson: I have a tour coming up, so I'll try to catch a lot of them. My family wants to go to a lot of them. SI: The Globe tabloid reported that you were dating Dale Earnhardt Jr. as a way to get some publicity for the sport. You want to put an end to that here? Clarkson: Yes (laughs). I met him at California Speedway for literally 2.2 seconds at the drivers meeting and then we ended up running into each other at [this year's] Daytona. I said, 'Hey, boyfriend, what's going on?' He hadn't even heard of it. It's funny. We don't even know each other. SI: You took a ride at Daytona with Jimmie Johnson? Clarkson: We were in a Monte Carlo. I didn't scream or anything, but my knees and arms were clinching up toward my chest. SI: Did he tell you how fast you were going? Clarkson: I told him not to. SI: What will you be doing at races? Clarkson: Just hanging out. I'll sign for fans and hang out and go to drivers' meetings. It's more like a friendly thing and not an official thing where I will be doing something big every time. SI: Did you play any sports in high school? Clarkson: I played volleyball, track and basketball, but I sucked at basketball. I played soccer when I was younger. I'm 5-foot-3 1/2. I was proud of that half. I played volleyball mainly because I was really great at serving. SI: What do you consider your greatest athletic achievement? Clarkson: You'll laugh at this but Pilates is hard. It's much harder than any sport. SI: You can trade places with one athlete for a day. Whom do you choose? Clarkson: Serena Williams. She is so kick-ass. I love her because she is not bone-skinny. She is a woman. SI: Do you own clothing with a driver's name or number on it? Clarkson: I own Kasey Kahne stuff. All of my family has a driver. I'm not very loyal. I have a Kasey Kahne jacket and a Martin Truex Jr. hat and a shirt of Carl Edwards. SI: Not exactly loyal?
