Greipel of Germany wins Down Under Classic

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) - German sprinter Andre Greipel won the 31-mile Down Under Classic on Sunday.

It's a prelude to the Tour Down Under cycle race that is the first event of the UCI World Tour.

Greipel also won the 30-lap race in 2008 and went on to win the six-stage Tour Down Under. He won the Australian tour again in 2010 and will seek to add another title in this year's race, which starts Tuesday.

He's lead rider for the Belgium-based Lotto Belisol team.

Outstanding teamwork set up Greipel to win Sunday in a sprint finish ahead of Norway's Edvald Boasson Hagen, riding for Britain's Team Sky, and Australia's Heinrich Haussler, riding for U.S.-based Garmin-Barracuda.

The Tour Down Under is Tuesday to Sunday on mainly rural roads around the South Australia state.
