TAMPERE, Finland (AP) -- Veteran sprinter Merlene Ottey of Jamaica stayed six-hundredth of a second shy of the world record in the women's 100 meters Monday, clocking 11.21 at an indoor athletics meet in Tampere.

Ottey, 40, also won the 60 meters in 7.20 seconds, equaling her best time of the year.

"The 100 was better than the 60 today," the 40-year old Jamaican said. "With shorter reaction times at the start, the times would have been better. I was still in the blocks when the rest were on their way.

"When you can run the hundred during the indoor season you always see how you feel during the important last meters. That is important knowledge preparing for the outdoor events".

The world record is held by Marita Koch of the former East Germany, who clocked 11.15 in 1980.

Ottey said she would decide whether to compete in the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, March 9-11, after another event in France later this month.

Leonard Myles-Mills of Ghana took the men's 60 in 6.64, but was beaten in the 100 by Christopher Williams of Jamaica, who clocked 10.34 seconds.

Dimitry Bogdanov of Russia took the men's 800 in 1:46.45, the third fastest indoor time this year.

Jacques Freitag, a promising 18-year-old from South Africa, split the high jump victory with Finland's Oskari Frosen, both clearing 2,25. Former Olympic gold medallist Charles Austin of the United States passed until 2,31, then missed.

Miroslav Menc of the Czech Republic won the men's shot put with 20,61 meters, the fourth best result of the year.
