OUTLOOK: Try, try, try again. Have appeared in the CWS 16
previous times without winning the national title, the most for
any school without a championship. As the No. 2 national seed,
would be considered one of the favorites if not for history.
The Seminoles have rolled through five games in the NCAA
Tournament thus far, winning by an average of 12-3. They lost a
school-record six straight games earlier in the season but then
reeled off 10 consecutive wins and appear ready to challenge for
a crown. No matter Florida State's outcome, 2B Marshall
McDougall will always be remembered for hitting six homers in
one game earlier this season. But he is also one of the
nation's best players. He led in the ACC in almost every
offensive category, totaling 24 homers, 93 runs scored, 109
hits, 91 RBI and batting .431. Enjoyed a 33-game hitting streak
during the year and is one of five finalists for the Dick
Howser Award, given to the nation's best player. RF Matt Diaz
is one of 40 players invited to the summer camp of the 1999 USA
Baseball National Team and is another offensive force for the
Seminoles. SS Brett Groves is a standout defensively and has
become a better hitter as the season has progressed. Florida
State has had one of its best pitching seasons, but the staff
will probably be shorthanded. Freshman RH Blair Varnes has an
isolated rupture of his left ACL. The injury is believed to
have occured during a postgame pileup after Florida State's
Super Regional clinching victory over Auburn. If Varnes cannot
go, sophomore LH Mike Smalley will likely be the choice if the
Seminoles need a third starter. Florida State's 3.01 team ERA
leads the nation heading in to the CWS.
