OUTLOOK: No. 6 national seed, the 1987 and 1988 champions return
to Omaha for the fourth time since their last title. More than
any other team in the CWS, Stanford has the pitching talent to
hold down its opponents. Has allowed just 2.6 runs per game
through five contests in the NCAA Tournament, including a 1-0
blanking of defending champion USC in the first game of the
Super Regional. Sophomore RH Jason Young tossed his ninth
complete game of the season in that contest against the Trojans,
allowing just eight hits with 10 strikeouts. Young and fellow
righthanders Justin Wayne, a sophomore, and freshman Brian
Sager, form an imposing starting trio. None of the three had
ever started a collegiate game before this season. The Stanford
pitching staff has held opponents to three runs or less in 10 of
22 games and five or less in 16 contests. It has already
recorded a school single-season record 574 strikeouts this year,
and needs just 12 more to tie the conference record held by last
season's Arizona State squad. Wayne owns the best winning
percentage in school history (.938, 15-1). The offense is led
by junior 1B John Gall, a first-team All-America selection by
"Baseball America." He owns a .358 career batting average,
which ranks third in school history, and is among the programs
leaders in doubles, RBI, and hits. 3B Josh Hochgesang, RF Joe
Borchard, and C Damien Alvarado are all offensive forces.
Stanford is currently ranked No. 1 by "Baseball America,"
marking the first time this season the Cardinal has reached the
top of any poll. Stanford holds a 28-27 all-time advantage
against Cal State Fullerton, its opening game opponent. The
Cardinal won two of three this season from the Titans.
