Report: Mariners, Dodgers agree on Johnson deal Posted: Tuesday June 02, 1998 07:34 PM
LOS ANGELES (CNNSI) -- After a week of haggling, the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers reportedly have finally agreed on a trade that sends fireballing left-hander Randy Johnson to the Dodgers. MSNBC, citing unidentified sources, reported Tuesday the Mariners have agreed to deal Johnson to the Dodgers for right-hander Ismael Valdes and utility player Wilton Guerrero. The Dodgers are expected to announce the trade before Tuesday night’s home game against the St. Louis Cardinals, according to MSNBC.
MSNBC also is reporting the Mariners want a reliever included in the deal, and Los Angeles is willing to part with right-handers Brad Clontz or Eric Weaver. Seattle reportedly sought starter Darren Dreifort, but settled on Valdes as long as Guerrero is included. The deal would come almost two weeks after the Dodgers engineered one of the biggest trades in baseball history, sending Mike Piazza to the Florida Marlins in a seven-player swap. Los Angeles shipped the All-Star catcher along with third baseman Todd Zeile to the Marlins for outfielder Gary Sheffield, third baseman Bobby Bonilla, catcher Charles Johnson, outfielder Jim Eisenreich and a minor leaguer.
