Wohlers returns to minors Braves demote troubled reliever, place Springer on DLPosted: Friday August 07, 1998 02:02 AM
ATLANTA (AP) -- Former Atlanta Braves closer Mark Wohlers has agreed to return to the minors. The team also placed right-hander Russ Springer on the 15-day disabled list Thursday night because of a bone spur in his right elbow. Since returning from Richmond on July 15, Wohlers has struggled, giving up 13 runs in four innings while walking 15 and striking out one. "I need to go and pitch," said Wohlers, who will spend 10 days at Richmond. "I don't need to be gone for 15 days." The team recalled left-hander Adam Butler from Class AAA Richmond after the Braves' 5-0 victory over Cincinnati. Butler will join the team in San Francisco on Friday. Springer was 5-4 with a 4.70 ERA in 41 games, including going 1-1 with a 6.08 ERA with the Braves, who acquired him from Arizona on June 23. Butler was 3-7 with a 3.31 ERA and 12 saves in 42 games with Richmond.
