For Red Sox, coin flip another loss Posted: Monday September 14, 1998 05:54 PM
NEW YORK (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox lost again even before they played Monday night. Toronto won the coin flip with Boston for the right to be the host for a one-game playoff in the event of a tie for the AL wild-card berth. All one-game playoffs would be September 28, the day after the regular season is scheduled to end. The Red Sox had lost eight off 11 going into Monday night's game at Yankee Stadium and their wild-card lead over the Blue Jays was down to three games. The New York Mets were winners in the NL flips and would be home if they tie either the Chicago Cubs or San Francisco Giants. In the event of a three-way tie, San Francisco would play the Mets at Shea Stadium September 28 and the Cubs would play at either the Giants or the Mets the following day. Chicago won the three-way draw and could have opted to play at Wrigley Field against the Mets or Giants September 28 with another home game the following day in the event the Cubs advanced. If the Cubs and Giants wind up in a tie for the wild card, the playoff would be at Wrigley. In the AL West, a playoff between the California Angels and Texas Rangers would be at Anaheim. If Boston ties the Angels for the wild card, that playoff also would be at Anaheim. A playoff between the Red Sox and the Rangers would be at Texas. If the Blue Jays and Rangers tie, the game would be at Texas. If the Blue Jays and Angels tie, the game would be at Anaheim.
