Temple seemingly has all the pieces in place -- a solid point guard (Pepe Sanchez), two bruising big men (Lamont Barnes and Kevin Lyde). Mark Karcher is the key to the ignition that makes it all work.
The Owls' leading scorer (13.4 points) after sitting out his first season as a non-qualifier, Karcher is the flashiest player on an otherwise drab but heavily talented team. His dazzling drives to the basket have left many a defender flat-footed.
But venerable coach John Chaney has little tolerance for poor shooting, which happens to be the junior's only downfall. Last year he shot only 36.7 percent from the field, including 29.4 on 228 attempts from behind the arc.
For Temple to make a run at that elusive Final Four bid, Karcher needs to start making more jump shots, not to mention cutting down on fouls (he had 97 a year ago).
