COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Ticker) -- LaToya Rose scored 38 points and Toccara Williams turned in a dominant all-around performance as Texas A&M cruised to its first victory over fifth-ranked Iowa State, 88-71, in a Big 12 Conference matchup. The Aggies had been winless in eight all-time meetings against the Cyclones, including two losses at College Station, in a series that dates back to December 2, 1989. But Rose helped Texas A&M open a big lead and Williams sealed the win in the final minutes. Rose made 5-of-8 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes to spark a hot start for the Aggies. She drained a pair of 3-pointers in the first 95 seconds as Texas A&M (10-5, 2-1 Big 12) scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back. The Cyclones climbed within 67-61 with 7:40 remaining, but Williams scored 10 points as the Aggies closed the game with a 21-10 run. Rose recorded a school record eight 3-pointers and Williams finished with 12 points, 12 assists, eight rebounds, eight steals and two blocks. Kim Moore scored 15 points and Janae Derrick added 11 for Texas A&M, which shot 46 percent (30-of-65) from the floor, made 11-of-26 3-pointers and 17-of-21 free throws. The Aggies won their second consecutive league home opener after dropping their first four. The Cyclones were the highest ranked team they have beaten since toppling fourth-ranked Texas Tech in 1995. Angie Welle had 22 points and 13 rebounds and Lindsey Wilson scored 19 points for Iowa State (13-3, 1-3), which has lost two straight and three of its last four. |
