COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Kara Lawson scored 19 points as third-ranked Tennessee extended its winning streak against No. 8 South Carolina to 26 games with an 80-61 triumph in a Southeastern Conference showdown. Lawson led a balanced attack that disappointed the biggest crowd in South Carolina history, 12,168, nearly double the previous record. She had 15 points in a dominant second half as the Lady Vols (15-1, 4-0 SEC) extended a one-point halftime lead. Gwen Jackson added 17 points and nine rebounds, Michelle Snow had 14 and seven and reserves Loree Moore and Ashley Robinson each scored 11 points as Tennessee pulled away for its 28th straight conference win. Moore's fast-break layup put the Lady Vols ahead for good, 47-45, with 13:13 remaining. A 3-pointer by Kelly Morrone got South Carolina (16-2, 4-1) within 49-48, but Tennessee scored the next eight points as part of a 24-5 run. Jocelyn Penn scored 19 points to lead the Lady Gamecocks, who had a 12-game winning streak snapped. Shaunzinski Gortman drilled four 3-pointers and contributed 16 points for South Carolina, which has not beaten Tennessee since January 23, 1980. |
