STORRS, Connecticut (Ticker) -- A lot in the Big East had changed in the past 10 months. Sue Bird scored 19 points and Tameka Williams added 17 points and 11 rebounds as the Huskies remained the only undefeated team in the nation with a 90-53 victory over Big East Conference foe Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish defeated Connecticut in last season's Final Four, 90-75, en route to their first national championship. But Notre Dame lost All-American center Ruth Riley and guard Niele Ivey while the Huskies returned most of the team that won 32 games last season. Bird, who scored 18 points in last season's tournament matchup, made 7-of-10 shots, including 3-of-4 3-pointers. She also had nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. Williams led Connecticut (21-0, 7-0 Big East) to a 51-33 edge on the boards along with Bird and Swin Cash, who had 11 points, six rebounds and four blocks. Asjha Jones scored 15 points and Jessica Moore added eight off the bench for the Huskies, who had 40-21 halftime lead and shot 53 percent (16-of-30) in the second half. Connecticut never trailed, scoring 15 of the game's first 17 points. The Huskies led by as many as 37 points twice and improved to 9-0 at the Hartford Civic Center. Freshman Kelsey Wicks scored a career-high 16 points for Notre Dame, which saw its bench outscore its counterparts, 32-14. Alicia Ratay added nine points as the Fighting Irish lost for the second time in three games. They lost only two games all of last season. Notre Dame (10-7, 4-2) shot just 37 percent (22-of-58) and went to the line eight times, compared to 22 for UConn. |
