Rules and Regulations
The cricket World Cup is for the one-day version of the game. The basis of the game is that each team gets a maximum of 50 overs in which to bat. The first team’s aim is to score as many runs as possible within the 50 overs or until its 10 wickets are used up, whichever comes first. The team batting second has to score more runs within the set amount of overs in order to win the match. Should matches be affected by weather, target scores will be revised using the Duckworth/Lewis method. Instead of the normal red ball, which is used in cricket matches, the World Cup will be played using a white ball. Also instead of the normal uniform of "whites" in the one-day international the teams wear colored clothing. A cricket team is made up of 11 players. Twelve teams are competing in the World Cup. They are the nine test playing nations and three countries that qualified through ICC competition. The teams are divided into a Group A and Group B of six teams each. In the first round of the competition the teams play an intra-group round robin tournament. The top three teams from each group advance to the next stage of the tournament called the Super Six. In the Super Six each team will play the three teams from the other group, ie. the team that finished top of Group A will face the three teams that advanced from Group B, but not the other two teams that advanced from Group A. Therefore no two teams will face each other in both group competition and the Super Six. The top four teams will advance from the Super Six to the semifinals. The team with the most points from the Super Six will face the team that finished fourth, while the team that finished second will face the third-placed team. The final will take place at Lord’s on June 20. | |
