Last July, 40 million U.S. television viewers joined 90,185 ticketholders at the
Rose Bowl to watch the U.S. women's soccer team battle 120 minutes to a
scoreless tie, then defeat China 5-4 on penalty kicks in the World Cup Final.
The U.S. women managed to do in three weeks what Pele, the men's World Cup, and
Major League Soccer couldn't do in 30 years -- they got America to pay attention
to Earth's favorite team sport. Whether we and our TV sets were turned on by the
lure of attractive, unabashed, sports-bra-bearing women or the simply wonderful
soccer they played remains to be seen. What we do know for sure, however, is
that entering the 2000 Olympic year, 27 years after Title IX went into effect,
women's sports has never been
healthier.
