Surely 60 homers ain't what it used to be. But juiced balls, andro, Coors Field and the Cubs pitching staff aside, finishing 1-2 in the home run race for a second straight season surely is. Mark McGwire (65) and Sammy Sosa (63) became the first two players ever to break 60 in consecutive seasons. The most convincing testament to their abilities is not the numbers they put up, but the fact that they remain head and shoulders above every other power hitter in the world. Widely credited in 1998 -- when McGwire shattered Roger Maris' record 61 in '61 with an astonishing 70 -- with saving baseball from the sins of its recent past, Mac and Sammy weren't much more than a sideshow in '99. Due in large part to their previous exploits, they didn't have to be.
