In a press conference prior to the start of the U.S. Open, Richard Williams boldly predicted that his daughters, Venus and Serena would battle through the draw and into an all-Williams final. By the semifinals, father Williams was beginning to look like a modern day prophet as his daughters had stormed past every opponent. Venus finally faltered against Martina Hingis in the semifinals, losing 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in a grueling battle of wills. Serena defeated Davenport 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 to advance to her first Grand Slam final in just her second year as a professional. In the final, Serena overcame 57 unforced errors with eight aces to down Hingis 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Williams became the first black woman to win a Grand Slam title since Althea Gibson in 1958.
