The tragic death of Payne Stewart nearly prompted PGA Commissioner Tim Finchem to cancel the scheduled Tour Championship. But instead, he decided the event should stand as a memorial to the fallen player. On the dawn of the tournament, a bagpiper clad in a kilt played two selections, including one entitled "Going Home", a song about a Scotsman finally returning to his homeland. Stewart was remembered fondly by those who knew him. "Payne represented the best of golf," said Finchem. "He was a man of great faith, a devoted, compassionate and most energetic husband and father, and a man of tremendous generosity."
