When Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis fought for the first time in March, all the ingredients were there for a classic heavyweight unification bout. After a generous portion of Don King and promotional hype, the combatants finally reached the ring. Twelve rounds later an expectant Lewis and a battered and bruised Holyfield looked to the judges for a conclusive outcome. Instead a controversial split decision left Lewis, the sell-out crowd at Madison Square Garden and the millions more who paid to watch at home in shock. In the November rematch, Lewis' attack was more consistent and less dominant, and in the end the right one. With the 12-round unanimous decision, Lewis became the first Briton ever to hold the unanimous heavyweight championship of the world.
