| Virginia Tech's leading receiver is a shining lesson in quality, not quantity.
A handful of the nation's pass-catchers boast as many as three times the 35 receptions of Andre Davis. But none make them count more than the Hokies' redshirt sophomore, who leads the country in yards per catch and hauled in nine of Michael Vick's 12 touchdown throws on the year.
The speedy Davis, who during his redshirt football season in 1997 won Atlantic 10 outdoor track rookie of the year, is a dangerous player for the Hokies to have. With most defenses preoccupied by what Vick might do to them on the ground, Davis is often free to exploit man coverage, like he did for 172 yards and two TDs against Boston College in Tech's last game. A nice day's work -- on only five catches.
Coach Frank Beamer almost certainly hopes Davis will be a factor on Jan. 4 against Florida State, a team that ranked a modest 50th nationally against the pass. One long catch often makes the difference in championships -- see Tennessee's Peerless Price in last year's Fiesta Bowl win over the Seminoles. |
