Scouting report
Let's give a big Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hi! to Mike Vick, the young man who made quite a first impression at Virginia Tech last season ... as a redshirt. Vick chose Tech over Syracuse and arrived in Blacksburg in 1998 as the quarterback of the future. The only decision for Frank Beamer and staff was whether the future would begin in immediately or in 1999. From nearly his first practice, the hype was on. But Beamer and Vick jointly decided the QB's progress would be better served with patience.

Now the hype is in the starting lineup. In practice, Vick dazzles with quick feet, a release that borders on sleight-of-hand and "Druckenmiller," as one optimistic eyewitness described it.

Vick had an impressive spring, and his start in the Maroon-White spring game attracted more than 11,000 fans. Don't get us wrong -- Virginia Tech, thanks to a stout defensive line and very good linebacking corps, will still be a team that relies on defense (12.9 points per game allowed last season). But if Vick matures at the rate of increasing expectations, the Hokies may be a team with the means to win the conference. And that would be Vick's lasting impression.
