The Plot

The Road to BCS Payday The fresh face, a freshman quarterback, looks around his new neighborhood and thinks to himself, "Yup, I could get used to this." Even when Kenny Kelly's passing game isn't there, he's got a back who talks of rushing for 2,000 yards. And when the offense rests, the defense -- which returns 11 of the 12 starters -- better not.

The Director

Butch Davis -- fifth year, 31-15

Starring

QB Kenny Kelly -- He's green, but the Devil Rays farmhand has a potent arsenal.
WR Reggie Wayne -- Sky's the limit if Kelly can get him the ball.
RB James Jackson -- Given to self-promotion, now he can prove it -- the backfield is finally his.
LB Dan Morgan -- Big East's leading tackler (150) in 1998.

Co-starring

TE Daniel Franks -- Among the best receiving tight ends in the nation.
LB Nate Webster -- Playing next to Morgan helps his productivity but hurts his Q-rating.
WR Santana Moss -- If Kelly becomes comfortable with the offense, there should be enough balls to go around.
OT Joaquin Gonzalez -- Emerging as a star on the O-line.

Why it will work

Kelly has so many options. If Jackson is as good as he says he is, the first-team offense has practically no weaknesses.

Why it won't

The Hurricanes' trip through a scary non-conference gauntlet begins early with an inexperienced quarterback and a Charmin secondary.
