The Plot

The Road to BCS Payday In four seasons under Nick Saban, the Spartans have won six, six, seven and six games. Good, but not great, much like this year's team on paper. One has to wonder how much MSU's chances of getting to the next level were affected by star RB Sedrick Irvin's decision to turn pro early (he was a fourth-round Lions' pick). Now there's no proven runner to complement a good, not great pass attack and good, potentially great defense.

The Director

Nick Saban -- fifth season, 25-22-1; 34-24-1 overall

Starring

WR Plaxico Burress -- Six-foot-6 beast coming off 1,013-yard sophomore season.
DE Robaire Smith -- Highly regarded by NFL types but coming off broken foot.

Co-starring

WR Gari Scott -- Burress' counterpart also dangerous as kick and punt returner.
QB Bill Burke -- When he's hot, he's hot, when he's cold ... 48-14?
DT Jace Sayler -- Solid pass-rushing junior on verge of national breakthrough.
CB Renaldo Hill -- The man who "intercepted" Ohio State's title hopes.

And introducing

LB T.J. Duckett -- Even with deep linebacking corps, Spartans' top recruit too good to keep off field.

Why it will work

The Big Three (Michigan, Penn State and Ohio State) all visit East Lansing.

Why it won't

Irvin will likley be visiting as well -- it's only an hour-and-a-half trip from Detroit.
