The Plot

The Road to BCS Payday The Tar Heels rallied last season -- after losing their first three games -- to go to a bowl game for the seventh consecutive year. They got there on the shoulders of true freshman Ron Curry, who made great strides at quarterback. If they hope to do so again this season, they will have to build their defense practically from scratch, as just four starters return. But UNC should get plenty of help from four key players who missed all or parts of last year with injuries.

The Director

Carl Torbush -- second season, 8-5; 11-13 overall

Starring

QB Ronald Curry -- Heralded two-sport star out of high school throws a football much better than he plays point guard.
LB Brandon Spoon -- Top returning tackler in ACC has best physique in conference, too.

Co-starring

TE Alge Crumpler -- Giant target returns after tearing up knee in '98 spring drills.
LB Sedrick Hodge -- Speedy linebacker packs quite the wallop.
OT Allen Mogridge -- Will anchor line that must keep Curry healthy.
WR Kory Bailey -- Stepped in because of injuries last year and solidified spot in starting lineup.

And introducing

KR Michael Waddell -- Had nine kickoff returns for touchdowns as a junior in high school.

Why it will work

Curry has the unique ability to win one or two games on his own for the Tar Heels, and the schedule is quite weak.

Why it won't

Too many question marks on defense in an offensive-heavy conference.
