Trouble in Paradise Notre Dame ('98: 10-2)Posted: Wednesday August 11, 1999 05:42 PM
The Plot
Last summer, most of Notre Dame's obstacles involved lawsuits and allegations. This season, the obstacles are mostly on-the-field. There's an offensive line starting nearly from scratch. A starting running back who was playing defense a year ago and who must replace the school's all-time leading rusher, Autry Denson. And a schedule that could make a grown man cry. But the Irish do have a superstar quarterback and a boatload of athleticism across the board.
The DirectorBob Davie -- third season, 16-9
StarringQB Jarious Jackson - Davie brought in coordinator Kevin Rogers from Syracuse in hopes Jackson can reach Donovan McNabb-like dominance.
Co-starringRB Tony Driver - Moves back to offense after nearly leaving school while stuck at safety.WR Raki Nelson - Holds best chance of becoming deep-threat receiver Irish desperately need. DE Anthony Weaver -- emerged as key component of ND's deep D-line during freshman year. DE Grant Irons - Junior looks to assume role of defensive stalwart if he stays healthy. FS Deke Cooper - Playmaker moves into firm starting role after three years as fill-in.
And introducingT Jordan Black - Following the exodus of Mike Rosenthal and other veterans, this 6-foot-6, 313-pound sophomore steps into the offensive line carrying great expectations.
Why it will workJackson may be Notre Dame's best impact QB since Tony Rice, and a host of potential superstars roam the defense.
Why it won'tDeparted O-linemen were key to success in '98, and no clear threat exists on offense beside Jackson.
