Each week of the 1999 college football season, CNN/Sports Illustrated brings you Heisman Heroes , an original series profiling some of the greatest college football stars of all time. Check in each week for a new installment.

Before he became the leader of the Dallas Cowboys, Roger Staubach made his mark in Annapolis. In 1963 he steered Navy to a 9-1 regular season record and a No. 2 national ranking.

Staubach became, at the time, only the fourth junior to take home the Heisman, winning in a landslide vote.

"I played well but my teammates were really the instrumental part of my success, and winning the Heisman trophy, we all felt a part of it," Staubach said. "In fact I promised that I'd cut it up in pieces and give it to them. They're still waiting for that by the way."

These days Staubach has found new success as Chairman and CEO of The Staubach Company, a commercial real estate firm in Dallas. In between closing deals, Staubach finds himself caught up in current Heisman watches.

"I think it's a big part of college football to have that intrigue going along with the team game itself," he said. "But trying to recognize individuals is also important and the Heisman, the recognition is the number one recognition as far as football."
