Each week of the 1999 college football season, CNN/Sports Illustrated brings you Heisman Heroes, an original series profiling some of the greatest college football stars of all time. Check in each week for a new installment.

"As athletes we all want to be the best at what we do if not the best, one of the best at what we're doing and so that Heisman trophy is symbolic at being the best," Pittsburgh running back Tony Dorsett said.

In his day, Dorsett was the best, setting or tying 18 NCAA rushing records. His career yardage mark was toppled only last season by Ricky Williams. In 1976, Dorsett took home the college game's premier honor, the Heisman.

"I think the Heisman Trophy is pretty much synonymous with college football," Dorsett said. "It's like hand and glove. It makes you feel like you arrived, you made it. People come into my home and it's like, that's the trophy they want to see. "Where's the Heisman? Where's the Heisman!? I want to see the Heisman!'"

In his Heisman season, Dorsett rushed for 1,948 yards as the Pitt Panthers won the national championship. After a Hall of Fame NFL career, Dorsett entered business in Dallas, where he had starred for the Cowboys.
