Bo Jackson (1985)
Each week of the 1999 college football season, CNN/Sports Illustrated brings you Heisman Heroes, an original series profiling some of the greatest college football stars of all time. Check in each week for a new installment. "When I was a freshman, even before my first practice, I got a summer job at the mall painting a parking lot and a friend came by and said so what are you going to do here at Auburn? I said, 'I'm going to win the Heisman Trophy.'" Bo Jackson's premonition became reality as he ran his way to the Heisman Trophy in 1985, breaking virtually every Auburn rushing record in the process. "Everybody was talking Heisman. 'I wonder what he is going to do this week to better his chances to win the Heisman.' I really didn't think that I was going to win." After a two-sport pro career with the Oakland Raiders and the Kansas City Royals, Jackson now plays to a younger audience as a part of the HealthSouth "Go For It" program. And to this day, Bo knows that he'll be forever linked with the Heisman. "I became a member of this elite group. And everybody wants to be a member and they can't unless they achieve certain goals on the playing field."
