Mike Garrett (1965)
"There are so many of the great Heisman Trophy winners that I followed when I was growing up and to think that I could be in the same thought as some of those great players, even now it amazes me," USC's Mike Garrett said. In 1965, Garrett, a running back for the Trojans, rushed for 1440 yards and 16 touchdowns on his way to being named the school's first Heisman Trophy winner. "What I remember was coach (John) McKay being interviewed at a USC basketball game, and he said that he would push me for the Heisman Trophy," Garrett said. "It was just something that I thought about every week that I had to get ready for the game of my life and I had to do it ten times." Garrett now serves as athletic director for his alma mater, and realizes the importance of the Heisman in today's game. "I think the Heisman Trophy grounds college football," Garrett said. "If you don't have a Heisman Trophy race and you're not looking at individual performances, it would take a lot out of the dimension of college football."
