Crying over spilt milk? Johnson sends letter of apology to Flutie for cereal stompPosted: Monday January 04, 1999 06:14 PM
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Doug Flutie, unhappy that the Miami Dolphins celebrated their playoff victory over the Buffalo Bills by stomping on Flutie Flakes, will receive a letter from Jimmy Johnson saying no disrespect was intended. Johnson decided to send the letter after learning Flutie was upset, Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said Monday. The celebration in the Dolphins' locker room followed their 24-17 playoff victory Saturday over Buffalo. Johnson crushed a box of Flutie Flakes, and his players then stomped on the cereal. Flutie was upset because proceeds from the sale of Flutie Flakes help children with autism. Flutie's son, Doug Jr., is autistic. When told of the celebration, the Bills' quarterback said: "That's like stepping on my son." Johnson's letter says he admires what Flutie has done both on and off the field and commends his efforts to fight autism, Greene said. "Jimmy certainly meant no disrespect," Greene said. "It was simply from a football perspective and not meant as disrespect for anything Doug has done off the field."
