Shannon in rare form Notebook: Win gives Broncos' Sharpe more to talk aboutPosted: Sunday January 10, 1999 01:52 PM
DENVER (AP) -- The score was lopsided, and so was the taunting. The Miami Dolphins had no answer for Shannon Sharpe. "I said, 'How does it feel to have the Super Bowl at your house, and you're not invited?'" Sharpe said. The Super Bowl will be in Miami on Jan. 31, but the Dolphins won't be playing. They lost Saturday to Sharpe and the Denver Broncos 38-3. "I said we were 10 to 14 points better," Sharpe said. "My prognostication was wrong. We were 35 points better." Dolphins cornerback Sam Madison was upset about being taunted by Denver receiver Rod Smith. The words came after Smith caught a 28-yard touchdown pass against Madison. "If you're going to talk, talk the whole game," Madison complained. "I talk before the game, during the game and after the game. Don't wait until you make a play to talk." There were also words between Dan Marino and Bill Romanowki. The exchange came after Marino released a pass and was then knocked down by Romanowski in the third quarter. "After I got the hit on him, he was trying to knee me," Romanowski said. "After the game he came up to me and said, 'I'm sorry for what I did.' I said, 'Dan, no problem - it got me fired up.'" Miami likes Denver in MiamiThe Dolphins like the Broncos' chances of repeating as Super Bowl champions. "We saw probably the best team in the league," Miami defensive end Trace Armstrong said. "Denver played like they'll repeat as Super Bowl champs," Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson said. The Broncos will be at home again next Sunday for the AFC Championship game. Their opponent will be either the New York Jets or Jacksonville Jaguars. "The Jets have proven that they can go into a hostile environment and beat a team," Dolphins linebacker Robert Jones said. "We still have to prove that." Miami finished 3-6 on the road this season. It's 25 years and counting since the Dolphins won a postseason game on the road. Conceding defeatDolphins coach Jimmy Johnson ordered backup quarterback Damon Huard to take a knee on the final two plays of the game. "It would be a shame for one of our guys to get hurt," Johnson said, "or for one of their guys to get hurt and hurt their chances in the playoffs."
