Super Bowl XXXIII Game Capsule Posted: Monday February 01, 1999 01:05 AM
Now that the Broncos have answered the biggest question of their 1998 season with an emphatic yes, two bigger questions emerge in its place like some kind of hypothetical hydra. Is this it for John Elway? And, pending that answer, can the Broncos become the first NFL team to three-peat as Super Bowl champions? Denver has, by most NFL standards, a dynasty. The Pittsburgh Steelers had four titles in six years in the '70s, but the Broncos could be the first to go back-to-back-to-back. They've won more games in a three-year span than any other team before them. Of the six previous teams to win two in a row, none have even made it back for a shot at a third the next year. The '68 Packers went 6-7-1. The '74 Dolphins lost in the first round of the playoffs. The '76 Steelers lost in the AFC Championship. The '80 Steelers went 9-7 and missed the playoffs. The '90 49ers lost in the NFC Championship, as did the '94 Cowboys. The only team to appear in three straight Super Bowls was the Dolphins, who lost in '72 before winning two straight. So, seeing how Elway didn't look too rusty on Sunday -- 336 yards, touchdowns by air and by land, his first MVP trophy -- the big questions are the same as last year -- will he come back, and can he do it again?
