Redskins made all the right moves Posted: Saturday April 17, 1999 03:28 PM
Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King, covering his 16th NFL Draft, will check in throughout the day with reports on the '99 version of the draft. You can find King's reports from earlier in the day in the related information table at the bottom of the page: ASHBURN, Va. (CNN/SI) -- Halfway through the first round, here are five things I think I think: 1.) I think Washington got the easiest No. 1 pick of all time. Think about it. The Redskins wanted to pick Champ Bailey at No. 5. They picked him at No. 7. By trading down to 12 with New Orleans, and then by trading back up to No. 7 with Chicago, Washington got Bailey and picked up sixth- and seventh-round picks this year and a first-rounder (from New Orleans) in 2000. It's like walking down a street and seeing a $100 bill and no one else around. 2.) I think the second-richest team of the day has to be Chicago, which got the player (quarterback Cade McNown) it wanted and a lower price because the Bears got to pick him at No. 12 instead of 7. And because McNown's going to be great. And because they picked up four draft choice, free, like Washington, in the process. 3.) I think Minnesota did a great thing in taking Daunte Culpepper with the 11th pick. The Vikings have gotten rich under Dennis Green by taking the best player on the board with their first-round pick, then drafting more for need in later rounds. And this pick has Randy Moss revisited written all over it. 4.) I think Pittsburgh reached for Troy Edwards, the Louisiana Tech wideout. 5.) I think the scariest defensive tackle combination in football -- provided Warren Sapp comes to camp at something less than 350 pounds -- now resides in Tampa with the Bucs picking up Anthony McFarland of LSU.
