1999 Ryder Cup

Justin Leonard led the celebration after his putt at 17 clinched the Ryder Cup for the Americans. Allsport/Allsport

Unbelievable!

U.S. overcomes four-point bulge to reclaim Ryder Cup

All Ben Crenshaw asked his team to do was believe. The Americans responded with a comeback that was simply unbelievable. Trailing 10-6 going into Sunday's head-to-head matches, the Americans won 8 1/2 points to become the first team to make up more than a two-point deficit since the format went to 28 points in 1979. U.S. heroes were everywhere: from Hal Sutton, who led the American team in scoring, to Justin Leonard, whose 45-foot birdie putt ultimately sealed the deal and set off an unbridled celebration.
