The more we thought about how to route the Top 18 Holes in the World, the more challenging the task became. Each hole possesses such richness in the tradition of the game that routing them together presented many difficult choices. How do you route the courses in a way the emphasizes what makes each individual hole timeless? How do you choose your finishing holes when you are deciding among several that have historically come to define "great golf"? How do you even know where to begin? After reviewing the holes and exploring options, one answer became clear -- we must route the holes in a way that collectively produces the best course. To accomplish that , we focused on linking he range of environments naturally and creating a variety of experiences in the game. We knew that we wanted a par-72 course with balancing nines, and we decided that we wanted a clubhouse with an ocean view. It was also important for us to incorporate close connections between greens and tees to allow space fore a large practice area. once we defined what was principal to our design, we adjusted the holes to fit our goal of maintaining natural settings, smooth transitions, and variety of play. For instance, we routed Ballybunion as the 18th hole so that water would play on the right, whereas Pebble Beach was chosen as the ninth with water playing on the left. We routed the collection of par threes for variety of length. The amazing element of this exercise was how unique it was to think about each hole individually and the to fit it into an arrangement for a complete design. we seldom have a finished golf hole with all of its distinct features in place when preparing a routing plan, let alone 18 specific holes that we have already played many times, if only in our minds.
