Dream 18s
Arthur Hills
By THE EDITORS
To play this collection of holes in one round is akin to listening to a series of the most pleasing symphonies ever composed in one concert, or reading the writings of the greatest authors in one sitting. How does one begin this routing? One has to create a rhythm and pattern which highlights the array of holes playing in different directions over varying terrain. So, my selection to begin the routing is Royal Melbourne's number six. The hole is open off the tee and in front of the green. It can be played by every golfer. However, near-perfect shots are required to be on the green. Next is the 575-yard sixth from Carnoustie. The front nine holes finish with Ballybunion's dramatic seaside 11th. The famed Road Hole at St. Andrews begins the back nine. Again, the sequence is overwhelming in its beauty and challenge. The famous 17th hole at the TPC at Sawgrass -- a gut-wrenching challenge for every player, every time -- sets the stage for the finale. And what a memorable hole it is! Pebble Beach's incomparable 18th is the perfect completion of a fantastic round of golf.
