![]() Jagr to miss Game 2 Penguins right winger sidelined with strained groinPosted: Tuesday May 04, 1999 01:10 PM
EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Pittsburgh Penguins superstar right wing and NHL regular-season leading scorer Jaromir Jagr will not play in Saturday's playoff game against the New Jersey Devils after aggravating a strained groin. Jagr originally suffered the injury against the Buffalo Sabres on April 5 and missed only one game because of a light schedule that week and returned five days later. He had an assist in Thursday's 3-1 loss to the Devils in the series opener and took four of his team's 25 shots. Already facing a daunting task in trying to salvage a split on the road against the top seed of the Eastern Conference, the Penguins' chances of getting a split of the first two games now may be impossible. Pittsburgh went 1-4 against New Jersey this season, only defeating the Devils on October 14, the second game of the season. The 27-year-old Jagr, a Hart Trophy favorite with his third 100-point season in four years, finished with 44 goals and 83 points for a league-high 127 points. He was tied for second in the league in goals and had 16 more assists than his closest pursuer. In Game 1, the Penguins were without wing Alexei Kovalev, who was sidelined with a wrist injury. He participated in the pregame skate and will play Saturday.
