Hit me again Boston fans prepare for another painful OctoberPosted: Wednesday October 13, 1999 12:33 PM
From Boston, Massachusetts, home of the bean and the cod, the New Kids on the Block and 81 years of baseball frustration, this is the Red Sox fan's lament: They're doing it to me again. They're doing it to me again. They're doing it to me again. I promised I wasn't going to be hooked. I promised I wasn't going to be hooked. I promised I wasn't going to be hooked. The only safeguard against a broken heart is a closed heart. That was the lesson I learned through the years. How could I forget? Did you see the looks on those fans in Cleveland at the end of Monday night? Each face was sadder than the last. Everyone looked as if his puppy had died. Logic says that if you never have a puppy, you'll never have that look. It's the only way. I said after the ball went through Bill Buckner's legs... I said after Bucky Dent -- BUCKY DENT -- hit Mike Torrez's grapefruit into the screen... I said after Tony Perez hit Bill Lee's moonball into orbit... I said. I said. My father said. His father said. Eighty-one years. Everyone said. Now they're doing it to me again. Red Sox versus the Yankees. One more time before the end of the millennium. Hit me. Hurt me. Do what you must. I'm back on the bandwagon, puppy in my lap, consequences be damned. I don't even have my seat belt buckled.
