Elway Rides Off Into the Sunset the Right Way Posted: Monday February 01, 1999 11:56 AM
MIAMI -- John Elway had just disembarked from the helicopter taking him from Sunday night into Monday, to the day-after-Super Bowl XXXIII NFL press conference. And as he walked from the chopper to the van to take him to the media, I said to him: "Just one question: Do you know what you're going to do and just aren't saying right now?" Elway gave me sort of a knowing grin. "I have a pretty good idea," he said. "I just don't want to close the door right now."
The one thing that worries me about the prediction? There's nothing in Elway's life he's dying to do. He doesn't fancy himself a pre-game show TV guy, which seems the natural place for stars to slide into when they retire. "Jim Brown retired at 29, after a great season, after being named MVP," I said. "Jim Brown wouldn't have retired today at 29, I'll tell you that," Elway said. "Money too good?" I asked. He nodded. "But you don't need money," I said. "Your grandchildren won't be able to spend all the money you've made in the last 16 years." "Money,'' he agreed, "is definitely not a factor in whatever I do." Nice knowing you John.
