BEIJING (AP) -- Four athletes have been kicked out of China's National Games after their doctor was caught with banned performance-enhancing drugs, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Thursday.

The doctor and four coaches of the Shanxi province track and field team also were banned from the games competition Nov. 11-25.

Banned were athletes Wei Jianhua, Li Qiumei, Cao Jun and Liu Wenjie, whose sports were not identified.

Inspectors, acting on a tip, raided the hotel of Dr. Chang Gehua this week, Xinhua said, citing a statement from the Chinese Olympic Committee. The report said they found erythropoetin and a human growth hormone.

Erythropoetin increases endurance by boosting production of red blood cells. The hormone builds muscle.

Chang was banned, as were coaches Niu Chunguang, Chen Yuejin, Zhang Hehong and Liu Tao.

China has imposed stringent anti-doping measures in recent years in hopes of restoring its reputation after a string of drug scandals in the 1990s.

The weightlifting team from Sichuan province already was banned from the games after a raid on its training center turned up banned performance-enhancing drugs.
