German ski coach in stable condition INNSBRUCK, Austria (AP) -- A German ski coach involved in the slopeside accident that killed French World Cup champion Regine Cavagnoud remained in intensive care, but his condition stabilized Thursday. Markus Anwander was doing better, though his life remained at risk if complications arose, said Dr. Wolfgang Koller, head of the Innsbruck University Clinic's trauma intensive care unit. "Everything is running according to the plan," he said, adding several surgeries were planned for coming days. Cavagnoud died Wednesday of injuries from the accident two days earlier. With family gathered at her bedside, the skier's respirator was disconnected after tests showed no brain function. The 31-year-old skier had just cleared a slight hump on the Pitztal glacier and was hurtling down the mountain when Anwander crossed into her path, witnesses told authorities. A senior official in the German ski federation, Walter Vogel, said Wednesday no one on the team knew Cavagnoud was coming down the mountain when Anwander entered the training area. Anwander underwent spinal surgery Wednesday. He also has a severe head injury. Cavagnoud won last season's super-G World Cup and was third overall in the World Cup standings. She also won the super-G title at the World Championships last February in St. Anton, Austria.
