Major League Soccer welcomed new blood as upstart Kansas City and 1998 champion Chicago battled their way to the top two regular-season records in 2000. Chicago won the Central Conference with a 17-9-6 mark, while the Wizards shocked the league by winning the Western Conference with a 16-7-9 record. Keeper Tony Meola captured MVP honors for Kansas City as he posted 16 shutouts. The 2000 season marked the end of D.C.
