First Round
Giants beware! The first round of the 2001 NCAA tournament saw 13 lower seeds claim victory in the first 32 games. A record seven No. 1-6 seeds fell with a No. 15, Hampton, becoming the fourth such seed to knock off a No. 2 when it defeated Iowa State. Gonzaga won as a lower seed for a third straight year and Indiana State scored its first victory in the tournament since its 1979 run to the finals.
