SYDNEY, Australia (CNNSI.com) -- Kim Young-Ho of South Korea beat Germany's Germawon Bissdorf 15-14 on Wednesday to win the gold medal in the men's individual foil.

Russia's Dmitry Chevchenko, who lost to Kim in the semifinals 15-14, beat Jean-Noel Ferrari of France 15-14 for the bronze.

Kim's surprising run to the gold included a quarterfinal victory against Ukrainian Sergiy Golubytsky, who has won the last three world championships and most world titles since 1992.

Golubytsky has not been able to carry that success into the Olympics. He won the silver at the 1992 Barcelona Games, but finished sixth at Atlanta four years ago.

Kim, who finished third in the 1999 world championships, won South Korea's first fencing gold medal.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
