10 Questions Shealy discusses Beanie Babies, traveling and SydneyLatest: Saturday September 02, 2000 04:37 PM
Courtney Shealy, 22, is a member of the U.S. Olympic swim team. She will compete in the 100-meter backstroke in Sydney. A member of the University of Georgia's swimming team and volleyball team, Shealy won the 2000 NCAA 50- and 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke titles. Shealy recently took time to answer questions about her upcoming trip to Sydney. 1. What's your training schedule now? We're are in the pool from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and then from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. 2. Would you be interested in playing pro volleyball? Yes. I want to try and play pro beach volleyball. But I'm going to swim for the next four years -- til the 2004 Games -- so after that. 3. Who are your sports role models? Jenny Thompson, Dara Torres, Summer Sanders. People who are my teammates right now. 4. What sports events would you like to go see at the Olympics? I want to see some volleyball, maybe women's basketball and track and field. We compete the first part of the Games, and I don't know what everyone else's schedules are -- so I guess it will just depend on my schedule. 5. Have you been to Sydney before? No.
6. What have you heard about it? I've heard it's awesome. Swimming is obviously the No. 1 sport in Australia. I'm excited about swimming there and in front of those crowds. 7. What one item of clothing -- besides your swimsuit -- are you making sure you pack? A really heavy jacket. I've heard it gets really cold at night in Sydney and will probably be cold on the pool decks. It's a big fleece jacket and is taking up a lot of room in my suitcase. And I have to take my U.S.A. Beanie Baby. It's a bear with an American flag on it. My mom gave it to me when I made the Olympic team, so it's definitely going with me. 8. Who will be the Americans' biggest competition? Our biggest competition will be Australia. It's their home pool. And I think as a whole the U.S. and Australia have the strongest teams. 9. Are any family members going to Sydney to watch you compete? My parents, Herb and Dianne Shealy, are going. We are hoping my sister Paige will be able to go. She is studying abroad in Amsterdam right now. And my aunt, Jane Livingston, will be going. 10. What do you plan to do to occupy your time on the plane ride to Sydney? I'm taking 10 magazines, 25 CDs. I hope to sleep quite a bit. I'd like to sleep the whole time. I just hope the movie is good.
