Hard part of training is over

Latest: Wednesday September 06, 2000 12:34 PM

Chris Murray, 21, qualified for the Sydney Olympics in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle events. A senior at the University of Georgia, he broke the Bahamanian national record in the 100m free (short course) at the Georgia Invitational in December 2000 and earned honorable mention honorable mention All-America accolades as the leadoff in Georgia's 200m and 400m freestyle relay at the 2000 NCAA Championships. Check in with Murray on CNNSI.com throughout the Olympics.

How's the packing going?

I'm still in the process right now. I was just looking at the weather forecast for Sydney. It's going to be cooler than I had expected. So I am taking some long sleeve shirts, sweaters, and some shorts. It may be sunny and I'll want them for during the day. Mostly I'm taking long-sleeved stuff. It should be nice.

What is the one item (other than your swimsuit) that you have to have with you in Sydney?

My lucky black gloves. I wear them on the deck to get psyched up no what time of year it is. They're made of cotton.

Where will you be staying?

I'll be staying in the Olympic Village but I am not exactly sure where in the village.

Will you have any family members with you in Sydney?

My brother, Allan, who will also be competing, will be there. My mother is coming to watch. She's staying with friends she's met, and my godmother, my mom's best friend. They're traveling together.

What has your schedule been like as you get ready for the Olympics?

I practiced at 6:30 a.m. this morning, and I do that again tomorrow before I leave. I've been practicing every day. It will be two weeks before I swim, so I'll still be training heavy but not taking days of rest -- other than the two days when I'm traveling. The hard part of my training is over, but I'll still be doing work.

Have you ever been to the Olympic pool in Sydney?

Nope. I've seen pictures, that's about it.

Do you have any plans to get together with your UGA teammates while you're there?

Yeah. Right now, there are three other guys, a freshman (Kyle Salyards, from the United States), another senior (Mike Fung-a-Wing, who will be representing Suriname) and a junior (Nicholas Kintz, from France) will be there. And then there will be Courtney Shealy, Kristi Kowal and Amanda Adkins there too. There are eight other swimmers from Georgia. All of us, and Jack (Bauerle, who will be coaching the U.S. team) will do something I am sure. I'm just not sure yet what.

Do you plan to see any other events while you're there?

I think I am coming back before they run the 4x100 relay, but Debbie Ferguson, a friend that also competes at Georgia, I really want to see her run. They have a good chance, maybe even the best shot, at a gold medal. I also want to see my other teammates swim. The only other non-swimming thing I want to see is the men's 4x400 relay. The Bahamas have some good guys on the men's 4x400 relay. I want to see Avard Moncur, he won the 400 m race at NCAAs.
