SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Weather officials predict fine conditions for Friday's opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics.

On Friday, Sydney can expect "fine, and cool to mild conditions," with "light to moderate southwest winds," Kevin O'Loughlin, acting regional director for New South Wales state at the Bureau of Meteorology, said Monday.

Temperatures on Friday will range between 51 degrees in the morning and 69.8 degrees in the afternoon, O'Loughlin said.

It was the bureau's first official weather forecast for the Olympic Games period. Weather officials will issue four-day forecasts along with "an additional, three-day trend."

Separately, the bureau will be testing new technology during the games that could enable scientists to forecast the weather one to six hours ahead, as part of an international research project.
