Family death deals new blow to troubled Edwards
SYDNEY, Sept 13 (AFP) - Britain's triple jump gold medal hope Jonathan Edwards is expected to stay on in Sydney despite the death in Scotland on Tuesday morning of his mother-in-law Anne, the Press Association reported. Edwards knew she was dying from a brain tumour and before leaving for the Olympics he visited her in a Glasgow hospice. On Wednesday he was wrestling with the decision whether to stay in Australia or fly home to wife Alison and children Sam and Nathan. It is understood, however, after discussing the situation with Tudor Bidder, UK Athletics' technical director for the jumps and one of his closest confidants, that Edwards will remain at the British Olympic Association's training camp on the Gold Coast. Edwards, the world record holder and silver medallist in Atlanta four years ago, has had a miserable week. On Tuesday he had to apologise for the British swimming team after a website report quoted him as saying swimmers were a bunch of no-hopers only in Sydney to party. Edwards later said he had been misquoted.
