SYDNEY, Sept 21 (AFP) - Canada's defending 100 metres Olympic champion Donovan Bailey morale was in terrible shape after falling ill with flu his agent Ray Flynn told AFP on Thursday.

However, the 31-year-old, who has failed to rediscover the form that brought him the Olympic crown a world title and a world record in 1995 and 1996 since he returned from a ruptured Achilles tendon, is still expected to line-up for the first round heats on Friday.

"He is feeling under the weather and has flu-like symptoms such as a cough and a cold," Flynn said.

"He must have picked it up on the way down from Brisbane where he was training," he added.

Flynn, a former top class 1,500 metres runner for Ireland, said that Jamaican-born Bailey had been able to work out on Wednesday and was hoping to do so again on Thursday.

"Knowing Donovan he will give it his best," a rueful Flynn said.

Bailey, who came late into athletics after forming a successful advertising business, was not expected to perform very well anyway after running a series of unimpressive races this season.
