SYDNEY, Sept 23 (AFP) - World record holder Maurice Greene closed in on his first Olympic gold when he easily swept into Saturday night's final of the 100 meters.

The brash talking Greene clocked 10.06secs in what was by far the toughest of the two semi-finals.

"It was good," said a super confident Greene as he strutted off the track to prepare for the final - 90 minutes later.

Also through were his arch rivals and training partners Jon Drummond and Ato Boldon.

"It was just the three of us out there," added Greene.

Ghana's Aziz Zakari overcame a false start to take fourth spot and a place in the final. He whooped with joy as he came into the changing area.

British sprint hopeful Dwain Chambers, who has twice this season finished ahead of Greene, won the first semi-final.

The 22-year-old Englishman showed no signs of the cramp that struck him last night in the second round.

He was followed home by Obadele Thompson of Barbados, teammate Darren Campbell and Kim Collins of St Kitts and Nevis.

There was bad news for Canada when Bruny Surin, who finished third in his second round heat, pulled up shortly after the gun with a nagging hamstring injury.
