SYDNEY, Sept 24 (AFP) - French pole vaulter Jean Galfione will definitely defend his Olympic title despite still suffering from tendinitis in his left Achilles heel, his coach said Sunday.

However, the 29-year-old, who is also the reigning world indoor champion, will only be able to make 10 vaults at the most according to his coach Maurice Houvion.

"We gave him an injection last night but he is still feeling really sore," Houvion said.

"However, he will take part in Wednesday's qualifying round and that is already a great victory," he added.

France can ill afford to lose Galfione, despite the fact he has been struggling for form and even no-heighted at the French championships, as earlier on Sunday world heptathlon champion Eunice Barber was forced to quitsuffering from thigh and back problems.

Their leading sprinter Christine Arron, European recordholder and champion at 100m, ran poorly in the 100m owing to a throat complaint and triple Olympic champion Marie-Jose Perec left the country the day before the first round of the 400m.
